Congratulations to Gabriela Bulisova, MICA MFA 2005, for recieving this years $25,000 Sondheim Grand Prize!
Gabriela Bulisova is a documentary photographer and multimedia artist based in Washington, DC. Her work focuses on underreported and overlooked stories affecting marginalized populations around the world and in the United States. She brings the faces of the forgotten to the light and gives voices to those who have been silenced and ignored.
Bulisova has received numerous recognitions and awards, including: the National Press Photographers Association’s Short Grant for her project, Convictions, on formerly incarcerated women of Washington, D.C.; the Open Society Institute’s Moving Walls 18, for her documentary project, Option of Last Resort, regarding Iraqi refugeesin the United States; the Corcoran School of Art and Design Faculty Grant Award; the Aperture Portfolio Review Top Tier Portfolios of Merit; the CEC ArtsLink Projects grant; the Puffin Foundation Grant; the PDN Annual Photography Competition Winner in the Student Category; and the CANON “Explorer of Light” award. Bulisova was a participant at the Eddie Adams Workshop for emerging photographers and a graduate fellow at the National Graduate Photography Institute at Columbia University in New York, NY.
In 2005, Bulisova was awarded the degree of Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Digital Imaging from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore. She is a member of the Metro Collectivea photography agency focusing on socially conscious projects, and the Women Photojournalists of Washington.
