Wide Angle Youth Media seeks interns for Fall…




Wide Angle Youth Media is currently seeking interns!

Wide Angle Youth Media trains middle school and high school students in Baltimore to create media about their lives and communities. Founded in 2000, Wide Angle has worked with over 3,600 young people to create more than 160 videos about local community issues. Wide Angle Youth Media seeks interns on a semester-long basis, for the Spring, Summer, and Fall. College credit is available. Interning at Wide Angle Youth Media is a great opportunity to work closely with a small, dedicated group of youth media educators and to learn more about youth media as a tool for social justice.

Administrative interns must have strong organizational skills and be detail-oriented. Strong writing skills desired.

Non-profit Management Intern
The non-profit management intern will work closely with the Executive Director and Development and Communications Director, learning the ins and outs of managing an educational non-profit. Responsibilities will be administrative in nature and may include data entry, drafting donor thank-you letters, creating and administering surveys, generating reports, or organizing bulk mailings. The intern will learn about donor cultivation, soliciting corporate sponsorship, budgeting, program evaluation and strategic planning.

Time commitment: 10-15 hours/wk

Development Intern
This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in non-profit development and fundraising. The development intern will research new grants, set-up and maintain a grants database, keep track of grant and reporting deadlines, create and maintain a database of relevant demographics and statistics, contribute writing to grants, LOIs, and reports. The intern can be involved in other fundraising activities based on time and interest.

Time commitment: 10-15 hours/wk

Communications Intern
The Communications Intern will help Wide Angle Youth Media implement its strategic communications plan, including social media integration, research, cultivating contacts, creating e-newsletters, and shaping the public image of the organization. The intern will learn about crucial tools for tracking communications impact, including those that monitor and analyze Twitter, E-Marketing, Facebook, websites and Google search activity. In addition, the intern will have several opportunities to write original copy for Wide Angle’s outreach and publicity efforts, including contributing to the organization’s blog and writing press releases. Strong writing and research skills are required. No social media marketing experience necessary. This is a great learning opportunity!

Time commitment: 8-12 hours/wk


Production Intern
Wide Angle Productions is looking for a Production Intern to assist our team in creating video content for local and national clients. Wide Angle Productions is Wide Angle’s social enterprise that trains Baltimore City youth ages 15-21 to produce digital media content for local businesses, nonprofits, and institutions with a social mission to improve the lives of young people in Baltimore and beyond. Recent clients include the Annie E. Casey Foundation, CSX corporation, the Family League of Baltimore City, and the Baltimore Community Foundation. Production Interns must have a solid foundation in digital video production, including operating camera, audio, and lighting equipment and editing in Adobe Premiere and After Effects. In addition, we prefer Production Interns with some experience in teaching and/or youth development, who can assist with mentoring and training our Youth Producers. Production Internships typically work 8-10 hours a week and may involve travel to film on-location throughout Baltimore. Teaching interns must have media production skills, experience/interest working with children or youth, and a strong commitment to social justice. Interest/experience in community organizing is desired.

Attendance and Design Team Intern
The Attendance and Design Team Intern will assist with the Attendance and Design Team program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-7:15pm at our main office in Miller’s Court.  This program is a unique and exciting opportunity to work with and mentor a group of high school students as they design various projects based off of the theme of school attendance for publications and promotions throughout Baltimore City, partnering with such organizations at the Maryland Transit Administration and Baltimore City Public Schools.  Experience with Adobe design programs such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is required for this position, and previous experience in a classroom setting is a plus.

Time commitment: 8-10 hours/wk

Baltimore Speaks Out! Intern(s)
Baltimore Speaks Out!, Wide Angle’s middle school media education program, is seeking interns to both work in the classroom and help with project administration. This is a great opportunity to gain experience teaching youth media to young people ages 10-15. Teaching responsibilities will include assisting in the classroom twice a week from 3:00-6:00, either on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Herring Run Library or Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Reisterstown Road Library, from mid-September through mid-December. Administrative responsibilities will include entering student information and attendance data, making phone calls to students or parents, and helping with lesson planning or preparation.

Mentoring Video Project Intern
An intern is needed to work one-on-one with students to help them with their video projects during the Mentoring Video Project class time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 7:15.  Additional hours will be spent assisting Wide Angle Youth Media Independent Study students on short, independent media projects.  The MVP Intern will also help seek and arrange local screenings for Wide Angle Youth Media’s youth-produced videos.

Time commitment: 10-15 hours/wk

Youth Photography Traveling Exhibit Intern
The YPTE Intern will assist with all aspects of Wide Angle Youth Media’s annual traveling photography exhibit and will gain experience with event planning and community organizing and outreach.  Responsibilities may include outreach and communication to partner organizations, building relationships with schools and other youth media organizations, scheduling workshops, maintaining an events calendar, helping to secure exhibition venues, soliciting in-kind donations, identifying and scheduling guest artists, general administrative support and transcribing interviews.

Time commitment: 10-15 hours/wk

Youth Speak Out! Intern
Wide Angle Youth Media is looking for an intern to support our summer Youth Speak Out! Program (YSO). YSO is a series of summer workshops in media production. YSO workshops last for 1-2 weeks and provide middle and high school youth with introductory experiences in digital and multimedia storytelling. Past projects have included self-portraiture photography, podcasting, animation, and documentary filmmaking. The YSO intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assisting with the development of YSO curriculum.
  • Acting as assistant teachers in the classroom (ex. working one-on-one with students who need help, or helping to facilitate a small group of students during activities).
  • Prepping materials and helping to complete YSO projects (ex. making sure cameras are charged or helping to edit footage that students shoot).

YSO internship applicants must have experience working with youth. Skills in media production (photography, video, audio) are preferred.
