Below is an email from Colette, and we thought it was an important example of how attending (and networking) at the upcoming SPE conventions can pay off in BIG dividends. This email is from a student participant (from the PEM program here at MICA) detailing how his attendance to the SPE convention opened the doors to many professional opportunities. Read on, be inspired, and ATTEND the conventions…!

Dear Georgia,

Thank you again for your time and help!!
Solo(ish) show:
So I met a curator from CIIS, California Institute of Integral Study, at SPE this year and I was asked if I wanted to have a solo show with Tomiko Jones. (I really not sure if I would call it a solo show since I’m collaborating, but they called it a Solo…)
They sent me a pdf version of postcard and links to their website and fb page which I attached to this e-mail.
CIIS website with the detail of the show
Facebook page
As it says on the postcard,
The show will be up on September 20 – November 17, 2015
Also they are paying me to fly to San Francisco to give an artist talk/round table discussion on October 22, 2015
The show contains two of my works which are,
Nikon International Photo contest:
I also recieved 2nd place in Nikon International Photo contest (video section)
I received $2000 worth of Nikon equipment, and they are planning to have a group show in major cities like, Tokyo, Osaka, Shanghai, and Beijing.
Featured on a documentary TV made by RCC (Hiroshima/Chugoku TV):
I was visiting Hiroshima, Japan this summer to research about my grandfather.
my on-going project, Sungazing, deals with the experience of A-bomb my grandfather experienced in Hiroshima.
One of the people I met in Hiroshima was a TV director who was interested to make a documentary of my research on my grandfather in Hiroshima. They made a 30 min documentary show that was aired in Hiroshima on 5th August 2015, which is a day before the Atomic Bomb day.
I thought it would be interesting to share it with you since they mentioned about MICA while they introduce me in the documentary.
I have a copy of the video but it’s all in Japanese.
Sorry for this wall of words, the show in San Francisco is one that most important right now and I would appreciate if you can help me get more exposure on the show!!
Hope we can have one to one meeting again soon.
Sincerely,
Kei
