MICA Photo Alum, Elle Perez, panelist in MoMA Forum
Elle Perez (class of 2011) participates as panelist in upcoming MoMA Forum…
MICA Photo is proud to announce that Elle Perez (class of 2011) will be a panelist at MoMa Forum for Contemporary Photography January 12th. The forum will be streaming on line live and available thereafter.
In these historic times, the need to connect as a community is ever more urgent and real–to dialogue, protect and buttress civil liberties and gender rights, to uphold our principles for a diverse cultural society.
This session will address questions concerning the active construction of identity through gender indeterminacy, the representations of lesbian, trans and cross-dressing individuals in photographic art, and more broadly the relationship between new gender roles since the advent of feminism and the intertwined fight for women’s rights and queer rights. (This session accompanies a previous one that took place in September that looked at gay men, desire, identity politics, and photography in the 1970s and 1980s, from Stonewall to AIDS –focusing on a discussion of the work and legacy of artists such as Jimmy DeSana, George Dureau, Peter Hujar, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Robert Mapplethorpe, and David Wojnarowicz, among others.)
The featured speakers are: Jennifer Blessing, Senior Curator of Photography, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; artist and activist Joan E. Biren (JEB); Johanna Burton, Keith Haring Director and Curator of Education and Public Engagement, New Museum; Catherine J. Morris, Sackler Family Curator for the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum; artist Elle Perez; and artist Collier Schorr.
Thurs. January 12, 2017, 6:00-8:00 PM • The Museum of Modern Art • Museum’s Founders Room
