New York Arts Practicum, Call for Applications Summer 2017

Call for Entries: New York Arts Practicum Summer 2017 session…

Applications are being accepted for the 2017 New York Arts Practicum, a summer arts institute where participants experientially learn to bridge their lives as art students into lives as artists in the world. The program is structured around apprenticeships with mentor artists, a critique seminar where participants produce work without access to their institutional facilities, and site visits to artist workspaces, galleries, and museums.
The intensive eight-week program offers participants a structured environment to experience the challenges of life as an artist and demystifies the many ways one can be an artist today. Mentees work in their mentor’s studio two to three days per week, meet Monday and Tuesday evenings for a critique seminar, and convene Fridays for site visits in artist studios, galleries, and museums. Past participants called the experience: demystifying, life changing, and an inspirational reality check.
By working with an artist on a day-to-day basis, participants gain a view of their near futures as artists, learning models for negotiating a creative life outside of school. Regular mentors include: Brendan Fernandes, Kate Gilmore, Pablo Helguera, Marisa Morán Jahn, Steve Lambert, Simone Leigh, Jen Liu, Eva & Franco Mattes, Mary Mattingly, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Not An Alternative, William Powhida, Doreen Garner & Kenya (Robinson), Brad Troemel, Penelope Umbrico, Clement Valla, Marina Zurkow.
Mentors lead critiques structured around developing strategies for creating work without institutional studio facilities. Practicum mentors lead seminars on their work, or related topic; these sessions are intimate views into their in-progress work, with a focus on process.
Program Director Michael Mandiberg facilitates critique seminar, and guides site visits to artist studios, galleries, and museums, many of which will include conversations with curators and gallerists.

“Reacting to what I see, I capture moments where I find connections. As though I’ve found another piece to my puzzle, another line to poem. Accumulating many photographs, I construct my narrative about identity, the beauties of life often overlooked, and what I mean to seek oneself.”  ~ Evie Metz

Ian Kline has work featured in Skylab Gallery

MICA Photo student Ian Kline has work currently installed at the Skylab Gallery…

MICA Photo is proud to announce that Ian Kline has a show currently running at the Skylab Gallery…

“It all happened so quickly; we all ended up at this house on the edge of the city. How it got there, how we got there, was the confusing part. It was as if by moving here we went through a black hole that spit us into what was supposed to be this perfect place; but within this perfect place there was a darkness lurking right outside of the yard, slowly creeping in. The only thing I knew was that I’d be leaving shortly after the leaves fell.”

Skylab Gallery

Ian Kline’s 812 photographs were made at a time of in-between, a time of confusion, hesitation, and quiet tension. Ian Kline wishes he could go back, but he knows he has already moved out.
